CHAPTER 14

Della pushed the door to their room open, her hands filled with shopping bags. Sophia and she had seen a few sights before going shopping and she had a feeling she’d probably spent more money than she should have. Della had thought long and hard about that big check from Harper, but her conscience wouldn’t let her deposit it. Not when she wasn’t sure that she still might bail completely on the investigation.

“I’m exhausted, but I had a good time,” Sophia beamed as she bumped her hip into the door, and it closed behind her. “Now I think I have something for everyone on my list.”

“Me, too,” Della said as she set her bags on the bed. “But I’m not sure how I’m going to get it all home.” She chuckled, but she was partly serious. She’d have to do some real twisting and turning to get all of her purchases home. Maybe she should buy a small bag to put it all in?

She thought of the stuff she’d already bought and barely found room for in her suitcase. At least most of what she’d bought were things that were small and could easily be squeezed into the pockets and corners of her suitcase. She just might be able to pull it off.

“We’ll figure it out,” Sophia said confidently. “But that’s a problem for the future. For now, we get to kick our shoes off and relax before bed.”

“That sounds amazing,” Della groaned as she sat down and began to work her shoes off. She massaged the balls of her feet and reached for some lotion to help her fingers slide a little easier.

Sophia went over to the window and pushed the curtains back. “You know, we may not have gotten a Strip view room, but I still think our view is pretty in its own way.” She stood at the window, staring out over the city.

“I think so, too,” Della said as she looked over at her. “It’s kind of nice to look out on the part of the city that’s like everywhere else. Can you imagine what it must be like to live in a place like this?”

“You’d never have to eat in the same place twice,” Sophia muttered. “I’m starting to think there are more restaurants than people here in Vegas.” Her eyes had a distant look to them, as though she was looking out but not really seeing anything.

Della started to run her fingers through her hair, but it was filled with tangles, so she reached for her bathroom bag and retrieved her brush. “I don’t think I’m cut out to live in a city like this,” Della admitted as she headed for the bathroom mirror.

“Why?” Sophia questioned. “It doesn’t seem that bad.”

“Yeah, but you’re used to Nashville. I’m sure there’s some pretty busy nightlife there, too. I feel like cities that don’t sleep would be too exhausting for me. All the noise and the excitement just aren’t my thing anymore. I guess I’m getting old.
